Cleaning and Maintaining Your Roller Shutters

cleaning roller shutters

Resilient and durable
Your roller shutters require fairly minimal maintenance and cleaning, because of their resilience and durability. Nevertheless, there are some steps that you can take that will ensure you have many years of trouble-free operation.

Constructed from high-grade materials
Made from high-quality aluminium, roller shutters last for many years and, with some regular cleaning and addressing any potential hazards, you should be able to use them without any problems for extended periods of time.

Maintenance tasks

  • ensure that the guides along which the shutters open and close is free from debris and clean
  • check the pelmet for any obstructions, such as dirt, debris, twigs and leaves
  • lubricating the roller and greasing the bearings on an annual basis will ensure that the roller mechanism works smoothly
  • lubricating the guide rails will mean your shutter can travel up and down smoothly

Use your roller shutters with care

  • ensure that shutters operated by a strap winder are not opened and closed too vigorously
  • make sure your shutters are firmly closed before locking them
  • open and close your shutters periodically so that they don’t remain fixed in one position for extended periods of time

Cleaning tasks

  • clean the surfaces regularly (every 3 months or so) to avoid a build up of dirt
  • use a soft brush to clean out the ventilation holes
  • brush or vacuum away any dirt, leaves or twigs stuck to the surface
  • hose down and wash your shutters with a sponge, warm water and a mild soap solution
  • after washing, hose them down again and wipe dry with an absorbent cloth
  • wipe from top to bottom and up and down, instead of from side to side

Clean with care

  • don’t use abrasive cleaners, solvents or methylated spirits
  • don’t use a high pressure spray—a garden hose is fine
  • don’t spray water into the pelmet or headbox
  • don’t use anything that will scratch or chip the surface (e.g., steel wool, scrapers or scrubbing brushes)

Following these steps should mean that your roller shutters won’t need need to be repaired and will operate without problems for many years.
